Beaucarnea recurvata 'Ponytail Palm' is a very unique type of plant native to Southeastern Mexico that is quite popular as a houseplant. It?s called a ponytail due to its growth form. The base of this slow-growing plant is bulbous for storing water and protrudes above the soil. The foliage grows sleekly upright before cascading outwards at the top like the tied back hair of a ponytail. Interestingly, this plant is neither a palm nor a tree. It?s actually a type of succulent, since it is in the Agave family. It should receive bright light at least in some part of the day, and is generally considered forgiving. Since it is technically a succulent, it grows best in semi-dry conditions and the soil should dry out well between waterings. Remember, the large bulbous base serves as a back-up water reserve, making the plant highly tolerant of drought in its native environment. When repotting, the plant should be rootbound and its new pot should be no more than 2 inches wider than the previous pot for best results. Although regular potting soil will do fine, keep in mind it will need to be watered less as well. Using a more porous, sandy soil will reduce the risk of rot if overwatered. Overall, this is an easy to grow houseplant with unique foliage that is bound to add some variety to your collection and reach up to 20 feet high unless pruned regularly!ALL PLANTS ARE SHIPPED IN POTS WITH SOIL OR OTHER MEDIA UNLESS IT IS DEEMED NECESSARY TO SHIP BARE ROOT.The plant pictured is in a 2.5" pot.
