Dyera costulata, or Jelutong, is an importantspecies in Malaysia. The wood is white or straw colored, and there is nodifferentiation between heartwood and sapwood. The texture is moderately fineand even, the grain is straight, and the luster is low. This wood is very easyto dry with little tendency to split or warp, but staining may cause trouble.It is easy to work, finishes well, and glues satisfactorily. Because of its lowdensity and ease of working, it is great for carving.Due to the nature of wood movement, shrinkage and expansionare possible. Please measure each piece carefully before starting any project.Wood is a product of nature, and as such, no twopieces are alike to start with, while the same wood growing in differentlocales can vary greatly even though it is the exact same species.Carving and Turning Blocks.
